Zakes Mda’s intimate drama tackles the difficult issue of land and identity in modern South Africa. Two women, one a former exile and freedom fighter and the other an Afrikaner veteran of the SADF (the apartheid-era army), meet at a church in the Free State and discover that despite their differences, they share the same scars of war and the same desires to return to the simple pleasures of their youth, when jackals howled in the village at night (the dying screams of the moon).

The play is a collaboration between two giants of South African theatre, writer Zakes Mda and actor and director John Kani and is guaranteed to be one of the biggest hits of the Market Theatre's 40th anniversary programme. Appropriately for women's month the play has an all-female cast and lighting, costumes and sets team.
