Six Characters in Search of an Author

Actor, screenwriter and director Sibusiso Mamba leads this interactive and surreal interpretation of Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello's famous absurdist meta-theatrical play.

The story unfolds as a seemingly improvised piece beginning with the arrival of six mysterious actors who insist on telling their story instead of the play that the theatre company is rehearsing. Soon the performance changes to incorporate the gripping story that the six new actors bring and as a new play evolves the evening continues to get even more surreal.

This is a ground-breaking piece of theatre and its arrival at the Market Theatre is part of the institution's commitment to push theatrical boundaries during its 40 th anniversary celebrations. What begins as an outrageously hilarious and laughable claim by the six actors in search of an author, soon turns into a deeply unsettling reality as it dawns on the audience that the controversial, tragic and, potentially true, story of these six actors may well make it to the stage

The play promises to deliver a theatrical experience that reflects a common theme in Pirandello’s writing of removing the audience from its comfort zone and immersing people in a spontaneous and combustive experience within the theatre, while also dealing with eternal themes such as family tragedies and broken communities.

Luigi Pirandello was a leading Italian author and dramatist who was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his almost magical power to turn psychological analysis into good theatre" and is often ranked alongside Brecht and Beckett as one of the most foremost innovators in theatre in the 20th century.
