Thursday May 5 - Thursday Jun 2 6 Jellicoe Ave, Rosebank

Arguably the first black female South African artist to gain international acclaim, at the age of 76 Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi is still one of the country's most influential artists. Inspired by the traditional African artistry practiced by her grandmother in the rural northern Transvaal, Sebidi grew up versed in the traditional skills and culture of her people and this delicate aesthetic and philosophy still finds its way into her work today. Sebidi's paintings and sculpture form a dialogue between tradition and the contemporary, the rural and urban, Africa and the West, and her distinctive style is a celebration of traditional African aesthetics.

In this exhibition the artist presents twenty new oil paintings, new graphic works and her first sculpture to be cast in bronze.

Opening event Thursday May 5 at 18:00.
