Unfortunately this event is now sold out.

Johannesburg was founded a mere two years before Frenchman Louis Le Prince patented the first motion picture camera. It wasn’t long before these cameras arrived on the southern extremity of Africa and the medium of film was enthusiastically adopted by passionate professionals and amateurs alike.

Leading local heritage specialists Joburg Heritage have assembled a selection of rare footage of Johannesburg dating from 1910 to the 1970s. The film excerpts show the city's fascination with dog shows and horse racing, motor vehicles and trolley buses, celebrations and protests, and the gold mining industry that brought the teeming masses to this place. Entertaining and sometimes startling, this is essential viewing for anybody interested in the city's unusual history.

Starts at 14:00. Costs R130 (Joburg Heritage members R80), booking essential. Call +27 11 482 3349 or email mail@joburgheritage.co.za to book.
