Mamula is a tiny island located near the very entrance to Boka Kotorska Bay. The island’s namesake fortress, a somewhat peculiar looking round structure about 200 metres in diameter, covers most of the island's surface. The fortress was built in 19th century by Lazar Mamula, and was used during the world wars as a prison, infamous for the cruel treatment of prisoners. During the summer months boats depart regularly from Herceg Novi and Forte Rose.
