No single place in Herceg Novi better captures the region's diverse and surprisingly (at least to us) inclusive and tolerant spirit than the Church of St Michael the Archangel. While it was only officially opened in 1911, after nearly three decades under construction, the structure includes architectural elements spanning Herceg Novi's history, including High Gothic window, Romanesque arches, a Byzantine dome and Serbian Orthodox interior, as well as some Islamic influences just for good measure. It proudly sits on the equally photogenic Herceg Stjepan Square, one of the old town's main public spaces, which is more commonly referred to as Belavista by locals. The church is open throughout the day and admission is free.
