Doménikos Theotokópoulos is the name of one of the most important persons ever born in Crete. If that Greek name does not ring any bells, you might have heard about El Greco. The famous 16th-century painter was born on the island but lived most of his life in Spain. The village of Fodele located 25 km west of Heraklion pays homage to one of the most prominent figures of the Rennasaince art.
