20km south of Hanover. Built between 1857-1867, the castle was a present of Georg V. to his queen, Marie. The castle was meant to look romantic and is Neo-Gothic, mainly in shape, not in structure. The Marienburg was never completed. The Prussian annexation in 1866 stopped the construction. The Ex-Queen Marie lived there for short time before she followed her husband into exile. The family did not return before 1945.
