Built between 1965 and 1968 from reinforced concrete and opened on May 1, 1968, the 279.2 metre, 43,000 tonne Fernsehturm (also known as the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm after Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, the Hamburg-born physicist and discoverer of electromagnetic waves). Once the proud home of a lofty observation platform and restaurant the tower is currently closed to visitors.
