Warta Landscape Park

03 Apr 2026
Warta Landscape Park protects one of western Poland’s most quietly impressive river landscapes, stretching along the wide floodplain of the Warta River in Greater Poland Voivodeship. Created to preserve a rare post-glacial valley shaped by centuries of shifting waters, the park is a mosaic of oxbow lakes, wetlands, pastures and wildflower meadows that change character with the rhythm of the seasons and the river itself.

Above all, this is a paradise for birdlife. Recognised internationally as a key European ornithological site, the area hosts more than 230 recorded species, from cranes and greylag geese to lapwings, ducks and elusive marshland waders. Bring binoculars and patience: the flat, open terrain makes wildlife spotting especially rewarding, particularly during spring and autumn migrations when the skies seem permanently in motion.

Yet the park’s appeal extends beyond birdwatchers. Quiet cycling routes, riverside walking trails and broad meadow landscapes create a sense of space that’s increasingly rare elsewhere in central Poland. Beaver dams, willow-lined channels and scattered patches of riparian forest add texture to what might at first glance seem like a simple lowland scene.

Botanists will also find plenty to admire. Orchid-rich meadows, peat bog communities and rare inland salt grasslands support an impressive diversity of plant life, while butterflies and dragonflies thrive in the park’s marshy habitats. Still refreshingly under-visited, Warta Landscape Park rewards those willing to slow down and look closely. It’s not about dramatic peaks or headline viewpoints, but about subtle beauty, birdsong, wide horizons and the quiet pleasure of watching a river shape the land as it always has.
