The only dedicated Aboriginal culture centre on the Gold Coast, Jellurgal is also wholly owned and operated by the local Aboriginal community. The cultural centre and information hub can be found in Burleigh Heads, where visitors can browse handmade traditional items, see original Aborginal artefacts and even watch in-house artists at work. There is also a multi-media display featuring interactive iPads, as well as a small café. However, the main draw here are the tours offered, which range from a 2.5 hour walkabout, which begins with a ancient smoking ceremony, and continues to explore the Aboriginal history of the surrounding area, to a full day Welcome to Yugambeh Country excursion into the hinterland. There are also two full-day tours that combine Aboriginal customs with visits to a local wildlife park (ie Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or David Fleay's Wildlife Park). Highly recommended for those wishing to get a better understanding of the area's history.
