Also known as the Danger Point Lighthouse, which was the name given to the area by Captain Cook, the memorial is located in a well-maintained park at the top of a grassy hillock on the border between Queensland and New South Wales, as good a place as any to get that prerequisite photo with one foot in each state. The location is also great for an afternoon out with the family, as it offers expansive ocean views, as well as opportunities for whale (during migration season) and dolphin watching.

The monument itself was built in 1971 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Captain Cook's 'Voyage of Discovery' around the east coast of Australia, and consists of four rectangular concrete pillars reaching a height of some 20 metres, and joined at the top by an abstract bronze sculpture. Despite resembling a brutalist 1960s relict that you might stumble across on a backroad somewhere in the former Yugoslavia or elsewhere in Eastern Europe, it's actually still functional as a lighthouse, with its electric lamp dutifully emitting two white flashes every ten seconds, which can be seen for up to 10 nautical miles.

Over all, it's the kind of place where most people will want to linger, especially on a sunny, quiet day, but if you didn't bring your own supplies to take advantage of one of the BBQs, and there's a popular coffee shop called Cafe D'Bar just outside the park area.
