The ruined garrison fortress in Kardhiq, 15km northwest of Gjirokastra, was built in the 12th century and expanded 200 years later during the turbulent feudal times before the Ottoman invasion. The castle consists of an 80m-long pentagonal wall with five corner towers, of which one is still mainly intact. Clearly visible from the newly opened road between Tepelene and Saranda, it's easier than ever to make a quick stopover and enjoy the views.
