During the Cold War, Gjirokastra's party elite had access to a huge and claustrophobic 1970s bunker complex beneath the castle that could hold 300 carefully selected people during a nuclear attack. Kept secret from the locals for decades, you can now join 20-minute tours that explore the 59 rooms that have been left as they were found, with labels indicating their intended funtion - offices, bedrooms, classrooms and even a court of law. Find the entrance next to the Town Hall.
