99 steps, one for each of the names of God in the Qur'an, lead up to the door of this mosque, built in 1757 to serve the needs of the traders and craftsmen in the adjacent bazaar. It's the last surviving mosque in Gjirokastra's old town, as 12 others were torn down during the atheism campaigns in the late 1960s; it was used as a circus training centre until it was returned to the muslim community in the 1990s. The octagonal building next door to it is an old Bektashi cemevi or gathering house.
