Kassel's magnificent Karlsaue park (or simply Auepark) was once just a marsh along the river Fulda. In the mid-sixteenth century work started on concerting the area into the Baroque gardens, with the Orangerie building added in 1710. The park was greatly extended and changed to a less geometric and more romantic English-style garden later in the 18th century. At the southern end of the park, Siebenbergen Island is a botanical garden full of flowers, rare varieties of oak trees and different types of landscapes.
