Built on the site of a former city jail, the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas (breathe) and thankfully also known simply as the Galway Cathedral, is a melting pot of materials from different ends and sources, making it heaven for architecture and building works connoisseurs. The floor is made from the famous Connemara marble and the ceiling from American red cedar. The pews are from African mahogany, apparently. Wondering what a pew is? So were we. They are those fancy church benches. If you’re already there, do find JFK’s face engraved in a mosaic. Impressed yet? He looks like he was when he last visited.
