Casinos & Gambling in Finland

more than a year ago
The Finns have a love-hate relationship with gambling. Gambling is strictly regulated in the country, with the state-owned Veikkaus Oy in charge of anything that involves staking money against outcomes. This covers everything from brick-and-mortar casinos to online gambling, slot machines and the rest.

To cut a long story short, if it involves gambling in Finland, Veikkaus Oy owns the bottom line. Despite this, Finns are among the biggest gamblers on the planet, with some sources claiming that 80% of the adult population frequently gambles in some form or another. Moreover, strict regulation means all profits from gambling go back into society through education, culture and public health initiatives.

But we aren’t here to talk about science projects and charity initiatives; we’re here to talk about Finnish casinos. When it comes to casinos in Finland, Casino Helsinki is the main event. The city centre casino started life in 1991 as Casino RAY in the Hotel Presidentti, eventually changing its name and location to where it is today. 300 slot machines, 23 live gambling tables and an atmosphere poker room await, along with live entertainment, food, drinks, and a tangible sense of history.

The range of games at Casino Helsinki covers familiar ground. The 23 gambling tables offer roulette, blackjack, punto and others, with poker available every day of the week. Gambling is the main event at Casino Helsinki, but there is plenty to occupy the hands and mind between games. Sports Bar serves food and drinks while showing all major sporting events, and Bar All In is a casual lounge bar guaranteed to bring a moment of peace before returning to the tables. Fennia Salonki is all of the above in one, famous for its high-society parties and thrilling poker tournaments.

Casino Helsinki is the epicentre of Finnish casinos and thus earns its location in the beating heart of the capital city. The casino is a stone’s throw from the Central Railway Station and just a short walk from the nearest metro station, Helsingin Yliopisto (University of Helsinki).

Casino Tampere is new on the scene, opening in the ultra-modern Nokia Area in December 2021. It is billed as Europe’s most modern experience arena, and it is hard to disagree. Casino Tampere brings classic casino games hurtling into the modern world, centred around the glittering Ukonkivi area, which offers automated and live roulette on electronic table games. If you thought there were no new turns for brick-and-mortar casinos to take, you haven’t been to Casino Tampere.

Elsewhere, Feel Vegas is a collection of slot clubs that also work under the Veikkaus Oy umbrella, with establishments in Helsinki, Tampere and several other locations around Finland. Casino Mariehamn is Finland’s other classic casino, offering a dozen slot machines and a small number of gambling tables on the picturesque Åland Islands. The usual gambling laws apply nationwide, with photo identification a must. The legal minimum gambling age is 18. Bet responsibly, as always, and good luck.
