One of the main mosques in modern Famagusta (and the one we're most familiar with, as Cyprus IYP HQ sits almost directly opposite), if you haven't spent much time in Muslim countries, the Osman Fazil Polat Pasha Mosque is a great introduction to the role that mosques often serve in local communities, namely, as active social centres and meeting points, in addition to being places of worship. In this vein, you're likely to find the courtyard filled with a diverse cross section of Turkish Cypriots, including many kids and families playing, eating and generally enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
If you're curious about the person for whom the mosque is named, one Osman Fazil Polat, it turns out he was a Turkish military commander, who played a key role in the Cyprus Operation, earning himself the nickname ‘The Conqueror of Famagusta’ (‘Mağusa Fatihi’), which just goes to show yet again that nothing is simple on an island where history, both ancient and contemporary, finds a way to layer itself in complex and unsuspecting ways.
