As a town less than an hour away from Dublin, Trim is lovely and was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages, with shrines to Our Lady of Trim in evidence. But its dominating feature is the enormous castle in the middle of town - one of the largest Norman castles still in existence. Movie buffs will relish visiting this location which was the site of several scenes from Braveheart, the majority of which was filmed in the surrounding area. Access to the Keep is by guided tour only but you really should pay the extra Euro to see it. Pictures: heritageireland.ie
