Beautiful, tranquil and steeped in history and myth - this is Yeats Country. A rugged coastline, mountains and awe-inspiring scenery make this entire county a land worthy of our most famous poet. You can visit his grave, fittingly located 'Beneath Ben Bulben' as one of his famous poems is titled, but there are much older graves to be seen too - some 5,000 years older - at Carrowmore, the largest megalithic cemetery in Ireland. Our famous Queen Maebh (Maeve) is also reputed to have had her final resting place at historical Knocknarea, but don't get us wrong - Sligo is not all about the dead - it is very much alive, even if the laid-back atmosphere will make you feel as if time passes much slower here. Relaxation is high on the agenda, but so too is being active, and this county is a mecca for ramblers, golfers, anglers and surfers too.
