Designed by the same architect responsible for the Bank of Ireland on Dame St, this gem of a hotel dates back to 1887 and - for all you metal fans - is made entirely from reinforced cast iron. Dubliners are frequently seen mingling with guests in its soothingly luxurious space or imbibing in The Ross & Walpole Bar, named after the hotel's builders. The Library Bar transports you to the 1800s with its high-backed chairs and occasional tables. Around the corner from Trinity College, the Central oozes history and is the perfect city retreat.
