Set in a garden of cypress trees on a promotory overlooking the valley, the Bektashi tekke or Shiite muslim religious centre at Melan offers peaceful contemplation together with the views. It gets interesting even before you enter the complex, where you see remains of massive early mediaeval fortification walls, an old church and an aquaduct. The elegant stone tekke, built around 1800 by Baba Aliu of Gjirokastra, is topped by the typical green-white hats that indicate the Bektashi faith. Inside, there's a round prayer room. A dervish resides here year-round, with large numbers of people coming to celebrate the traditional muslim holidays. The tekke is reached from Glina: turn left uphill after the water bottling plant, and left again after passing through Vllahogoranxi.
