We love ourselves a visitor centre, and we’re happy to celebrate the many marvellous visitor centres around Croatia. In these information hubs, you’ll find everything you need for your destination of choice, with interactive content for visitors of all ages.
The Forester’s House, Krka National Park
Housed on what was once an actual forester’s house, this fabulous information centre in Krka National Park is one big love letter to the towering trees found all around us. The centre’s central focus is on promoting a love and awareness of forests, particularly the downy oak and oriental hornbeam found throughout the park, and this love is transmitted through a brilliant permanent exhibition and much more. There are themed trails, a children’s playground and engaging educational tidbits all around.
GEO Info Centre, Voćin
The perfect starting point for any exploration of the UNESCO-protected Papuk Geopark, the park’s information centre celebrates its surroundings through interactive displays, multimedia options and good old-fashioned information. There is plenty to explore in Papuk, and the info centre is the best place to get a handle on all that marvellous geology, biology, culture and heritage.
DUBoak
An award-winning heritage site, this magnificent spot dives deep into the relationship between oak and the sea, which is much more impactful and influential than you might first assume. Those ships had to be made out of something, right? The permanent exhibition at this fabulous centre focuses on the Dubašnica forest and traditional seafaring vessels, as timber from these parts found its way to Venice and onto the wider world. If you’re looking to understand local maritime heritage (and maybe global maritime heritage, as a result), get yourself to DUBoak.
Veliki Kaštel Interpretation Center
Developed under the umbrella of the Makarska Museum, the Veliki Kaštel Interpretation Center is custom-made to help visitors understand the fascinating culture and history of the fortress in the cliffs. The museum covers the archaeological, cultural and ethnological heritage, showcasing all three with enthusiasm and knowledge that is to be celebrated, presenting this fabulous place in a fresh, innovative light. The site’s natural heritage is the main event, particularly the life and work of Biokovo Botanical Garden Kotišina founder Fr. Jure Radić.
Large Carnivores Visitor Centre, Stara Sušica
It is time to get up close and personal with the big three beasts of Croatia. Anyone interested in learning about bears, wolves or lynxes should head to Stara Sušica and the Velike Zvijeri (the Large Carnivores Visitor Centre) for a multimedia extravaganza that shines a light on the biggest meat-eaters in this part of the world. The centre is located close to the gorgeous castle of the Frankopan family, but that is just a beautiful addition to the education and excitement of the centre. Head into the marvellous forest and fall in love.
Speleon - Centre of subterranean heritage
The Caves of Barać are among the most fascinating in Croatia, and the underground experience just got a little more awesome with the opening of the Centre of Subterranean Heritage. First of all, it just sounds cool, right? Like something out of a superhero movie, where the good guys plan and the bad guys plot. Just 20 minutes from Plitvice Lakes National Park (90 minutes or so from Zagreb), Speleon is a real adventure for all the family, with more than enough to keep visitors young and old engaged and enraptured. The Speleo Polygon is particularly interesting, a speleology-inspired children’s playroom perfect for inspiring young explorers.
