Some 30 minutes or so south of Cape Town in the direction of Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay has long been a favoured day trip destination of those lucky enough to venture to the very end of Africa. The bay is hemmed in by dramatic mountains that contain many mysterious caves, while the harbour itself carries an air of idyllic fishing tranquility, the likes of which inspire writers to put pen to paper and retired painters to dust off the canvas once more. Southern right whales can be seen here between May and December.
