An enduring favourite, Pantry by Marble at Keyes Art Mile has opened a brand-new branch at Standard Bank's headquarters in Rosebank. Promising to be just as fabulous as their flagship store, Pantry is the brainchild of restaurateur and chef David Higgs, and is known for delicacies such as soft serve ice cream, and delicious ready-made meals. As a smaller version of this Joburg favourite (a 'Pantry express', if you will) the new store offers "fancy but easy" ready-to-go meals, scrumptious pastries, and, of course, divine coffee. The Standard Bank branch of Pantry at 30 Baker Street, Rosebank, is open to the public Mon – Fri from 09:00 – 16:00 and Sat from 08:30 – 13:00.

The Pot Luck Club and sister restaurant The Shortmarket Club in Oxford Parks, Rosebank, are offering outstanding and refreshingly affordable prix fixe ('fixed price') lunch menus until the end of November.
We swung by The Shortmarket Club to sample the offering and were duly impressed. At a fixed price of R450 p.p., you can indulge in a four-course meal that features exquisite Thai sashimi with a mouth-watering array of sides and sauces, delightful beef tartare with a gochujang (Korean red chilli paste) dressing, as well as buttery pan-fried fish with cauliflower puree and mussel salsa. For dessert, there's an oozy dulce molten lava chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream and peanut brittle. For an additional R395 p.p., you can also enjoy an optional wine pairing that features the best of The Shormarket Club's superb wine collection. (Read our review here.)

Featuring fish sliders with miso mayo, smoked beef fillet with truffle c

tashas Rosebank gets a refresh

tashas Rosebank is a bright, New York-inspired space with a unique book installation. Photo: Supplied.
Already a fan favourite following their opening in 2010, tashas Rosebank recently underwent a renovation – to the great delight of Joburgers. Inspired by New York, this café-come-restaurant with its Big Apple energy is an important part of The Zone @ Rosebank's buzz. The renovation features a refreshed sense of style, stunning cocktails, and new items on the evening dining menu. Regarded as an "oasis in the midst of the surrounding Johannesburg", the store's interior is characterised by touches of gold and soft, autumnal hues. It is also renowned for its striking book installation, which was designed by artist Lisa Occhipinti. Made of repurposed, cascading books, Occhipinti was inspired by the libraries of New York. The centrepiece is unique to the Rosebank branch, and adds to the calm and tranquil atmosphere of the space.

tashas also features outside seating on a chic, tiled veranda that is covered by umbrellas and closed off by plants aplenty. In addition to renovating the décor, the tashas menu also received a revamp. Also inspired by New York-style cuisine, the menu now features more satisfying and hearty meals that are ideal for evening dining. These new "classic-meets-modern" main courses include two prawn dishes, a T-bone steak with chimichurri butter, the signature 'Rosebank Deluxe Burger', and two lighter chicken dishes. The desserts – which include all-American favourites such as apple crumble, banana foster, and Boston cream-baked Alaska – are also new, and promise to delight guests with their decadence. Perfect for brunch, lunch, a quick coffee with friends, or a weekend dinner, tashas Rosebank is open every Mon – Sun from 07:30 – 21:00.

For Joburgers heading to Cape Town

Ryan Cole's COY has a relaxed take on fine dining. Photo: Supplied by COY.
For lovers of Chef Ryan Cole's culinary artistry (we are huge fans of Salsify at the Round House) we have some fantastic news: COY, his new restaurant is open at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town! So if you're visiting the Mother City over the December holidays, be sure to put this on your to-do list.
Along with chefs Teenola Govender and Geoffrey Abrahams, COY is Cole's second restaurant. At its standalone spot between the Bascule Bridge and the Robinson Dry Dock, it has a great view of the marina on one side and the harbour and Table Mountain on the other. With their "relaxed yet refined take on fine dining", these chefs are all about uncovering and rediscovering South Africa's overlooked culinary treasures.

The food here is inspired by unique techniques, unusual ingredients, and, most importantly, the country's forgotten culinary stories. This approach has also been extended to the restaurant's interior, which is characterised by dark and moody décor that places the food at the centre of the experience. The restaurant offers two fine dining experiences: a seven-course tasting menu and a lighter lunch option. The tasting menu is complemented by a perfectly curated wine pairing, and a selection of cocktails is also available. In their own words, COY is "a celebration of local craftsmanship, the essence of Africa and its cuisines... and the vibrant spirit of Cape Town". Open Mon – Sun from 12:00 to 21:00. Reservations can be made at reservations@coyretstaurant.com.
