It might be positively bitesize in comparison to the new cathedral, but the original still has plenty to offer the visitor. The oldest church in Cádiz, the Santa Cruz Church was supposedly built on the remains of an old mosque, a common theme throughout formerly Islamic Andalusia, a house of Catholic worship built in the 13th century and modified plenty of times in the centuries since. The interior is plenty pretty, with the gilded wooden altarpiece the undeniable highlight. Admission to the church is free, but do make a note of the messy opening hours.
