There are two main Christmas markets, with smaller concerns dotted around the city. The longest running and probably the most touristy is the market on Vörösmarty tér. About 10 minutes away by foot, in the shadow of the basilica, is the Basilica Christmas Fair. Both of these markets are full to the gunwales with a mixture of Hungarian folk art, and a certain amount of the inevitable yuletide kitsch. The work of genuine craftspeople - glass blowers, candle makers, woodworkers, potters, leather smiths, lace-makers and embroiderers - is showcased at these markets, as perhaps at no other time of year. At either market, you can take a break from retail therapy to load up on Hungarian delicacies such as Kürtőskalács - the stacked "chimney cake", as well as seasonal standards like roast chestnut. To really warm the blood, a shot of Pálinka (Hungarian schnapps) or mulled wine seldom goes amiss. Note that the food and beverage stalls stay open a bit later on Friday, Saturday and Sunday until about 22:00.
