Situated on the Pest side of the Szabadság Bridge, the Big Market (as it is known), is a remarkable building which should not be missed. Had Jesus embraced the idea of trading inside the house of God, cathedrals around the world would probably look like this. Planned by Gustav Eiffel (yes... the man who built the tower of the same name – and the Nyugati Train Station), huge arched windows cast light in an occasionally numinous fashion across the many meat and vegetable stalls which line its spacious aisles. There is a grocer in the basement selling useful non-Hungarian ingredients.
