This is a real slice of the old Budapest that seems to be disappearing all around us, (as quickly as Thai fast food and gourmet burger places are opening up). Nestled in the inner streets of the 13th district, the food at this splendid establishment is healthy in the way that dishes which "stick to your ribs" used to be deemed healthy by Hungarian grandmothers. The menu is heavy on duck, game and cabbage, light on fitness salads. Named in honour of the newspaper men that apparently used to eat here back in the day, it is festooned with old newspaper clippings, photographs, antique gramophones and so on. Firkász is also the working home of Hungary's best bar room pianist (and he's got the trophies to prove it), the highly mellifluous Ökrös Ottó. Whilst not precisely a romantic spot, it's a great place to go with someone/people you love. Highly recommended.
