One of the finest new restaurants in Budapest is perched on a romantic cobblestone street corner, diagonally opposite the beautiful ruins of a 17th century cathedral. Baltazar is just far enough from the main concentration of Buda castle restaurants to feel like a discovery. But enough about the great location. What about the food? Well, this is beautifully cooked and presented Hungarian and international fare for realistic appetites. The menu card includes a range of charcoal grilled "gourmet burgers", but if that phrase still strikes you as an oxymoron there are plenty of other options, whether from the Hungarian or Daily Menu. Service is polished and attentive, and recommendations from a brilliantly selected Hungarian wine list were right on the nose every time on our last visit. They also mix a bracing Vesper Martini.
