Located an hour east of Bratislava, Nitra is the fifth-biggest city in Slovakia and also one of the most underrated. This is Slovakia’s oldest town, a living monument first mentioned all the way back in 828, home to a delightful old town and one of the best castles in the region. A number of religious spots are found in and around town, including the 9th century Church of St. Stephan. Slovakia’s main Holocaust Memorial is housed in Nitra’s synagogue. This little stunner is very much Slovakia in a nutshell.
