Bilbao's old town is where the city was born, the medieval and fortified area dedicated to trade and port traffic since the genesis of the city. The old quarter is composed by Las Siete Calles, the seven main streets, and many narrow alleys called cantons that connect them. Apart from being a shopping centre due to the large number of stores, bars and restaurants, we highlight some iconic buildings in the quarter: The Gothic style Cathedral of Santiago (who is also our city's patron); Plaza Nueva, with its covered corridor and arcades, and a roman neoclassical style, a must-see place in Bilbao; The Church of San Anton and the the bridge next to it, are both a city icons, forming part of the city's coat of arms; The neo baroque Arriaga Theatre is one of the most notable buildings in our city.
