Berlin's alternative opera is a ground-breaking, trendsetting endeavour founded in 1976. Performing at first at various venues around the city, the opera found a permanent home on Karl-Marx-Strasse in 1988. Since its inception, the NO has been staging musical theatre of various genres. The programme ranges from the baroque opera (such as Tom Jones) to musicals (The Miracle of Neukölln), from operetta (Messeschlager Gisela) to the soap operetta (The Krötzkes), from grand opera (Macbeth) to revue and children's music theatre. Very much a key part of essential Berlin. Check the website for latest performances.
