Hieronymus Bosch, Visions Alive

Much of the life of the mediaeval artist Hieronymus Bosch is a mystery. He was born in the Dutch town of Den Bosch around 1450 and had a successful career as painter, but only 20 paintings remain. In fact, only the year of his death, 500 years ago, is factually known, and celebrated across the world this year with special exhibitions. In Berlin, the fantastic multimedia exhibition "Hieronymus Bosch – Visions Alive" has an introduction hall with background information and interactive screens... and then submerges visitors in Bosch's vivid images with details of his most important works projected on huge screens in two large halls. As you sit, stand or comfortably lie in darkness, the walls around show a colourful sequence of magical animated imagery, set to fitting music. From the creatures from his 1507 masterpiece "Garden of Earthly Delights" to lively scenes from mediaeval hell, the 30-minute show - which is played continuously on loop - is ideally seen twice to catch all the marvellous details.
Alte Münze, Molkenmarkt 2, U Klosterstrasse, tel. +49 1745 76 12 46.
