The Museum of African Art in Belgrade is the only Museum in the region entirely dedicated to promoting the arts and cultures of the African continent. As part of the Socialist Yugoslav context, at the time of its opening to the public in 1977, the Museum was promoted as the only anti colonial European museum. To this day the Museum continues to foster good relations with the African diplomatic community in Belgrade, institutions in Africa, and aims to maintain a referential role in the wider European academic field of African Studies. Besides collection based exhibitions, the museum’s aspires to host internationally renowned and yet to be recognised artists from the African continent or artists with an “African” background.
