A great name, we’ll say that much. Sham Castle is a curious piece of architecture on Claverton Down, an 18th century folly that consists of an extravagant wall with decorative turrets, ostensibly built to improve the view. There are a number of these so-called Sham Castles found around the south of England, and they make for quite magnificent photographs. It sort of looks like something from a movie set. The Bath Skyline walking route passes it, while the U1 bus drops off at Woodland Place, a 10-minute or so walk from the ‘castle’.
