‘Den Gamle By’ is Danish for ‘the Old Town’, so no surprises here. This is Denmark as it once was, a friendly time machine whisking visitors from the modern day all the way back to various points in the past. This was the world’s first open air museum of this kind, a living love letter to everything Denmark was and everything that made it the country it is today, namely community, character, charm and cheer. More than 75 historical buildings are found here, covering more than 20 Danish towns across the country. Wandering around Den Gamle By is one of the great Aarhus experiences — be sure to snap the Coin Master’s Mansion and the Aalborg Estate, at the very least. Children under 18 can visit for free.
