Hurricane Luis illustrated his destructive powers in 1995 by ruining large swathes of St. Maarten including the only 18-hole golf course on the island. Although the beautifully designed fairways are still intact, the course is only a shadow of its former glory. It's usually best to play after a heavy rainfall as the links have no watering system, meaning there's little grass on the fairways. The course is littered with rotting remnants of old buildings waiting for the next hurricane to finally end their misery. That said, the current staff does its best to maintain the course and keep it playable. Golfers searching for adventure might enjoy the character and challenges presented by the course, but snobs will probably prefer the celebrated course on Anguilla.
