French, English, Dutch and Spanish armies fought many battles over tiny Sint Eustatius, or Statia (STAY-shuh) as the locals call it. The island changed hands between European powers exactly 22 times over the course of a few centuries. Prosperity grew rapidly for European land barons who ran the island's 76 plantations, but wars, declining sugar prices and the ban on slavery made the Europeans look for greener pastures. Today, the island's population is comprised of a mere 2,000 inhabitants. The Golden Rock, as the island is known, features The Quill, a long-extinct crater 604m in height. Diving is also quite popular here with more than 200 wrecks to explore in nearby waters. Statia is without a doubt the least explored island of the six that form the Dutch Caribbean.
