November 16 is a national holiday on Statia when locals reflect on the island's role in American history. It commemorates the fact that in 1776 St. Eustatius was the first country in the world to recognise the independence of the United States of America. Uniformed groups parade through the streets and the event is preceded by fashion shows, plays, concerts and eating at plenty of food stalls.
