Puffinus Iherminieri is the Latin name of one of the many indigenous birds on Saba. This wedrego, as it's called locally, is considered to be the national bird of Saba, which is why it commands a prominent position on the island's coat of arms. The rest of Saba's national symbol is occupied by pieces of Saban cabbage, ships, fish, the white potato and its biggest landmark, the volcano. Locals claim that 'the whole shield represents the beauty, sufferings, sturdiness, friendship and tolerance of this unusual people blessed by God'. The words at the bottom, Remis Velisque, which means 'with all one's might', are inscribed on local rowing oars.
