Genoa

Piazza de Ferrari

more than a year ago
Piazza de Ferrari is the main square in Genoa, and divides the city neatly in two with the old town on one side and Via XX Settembre on the other. By day it’s full of tourists, school children, business folk and people just chilling next to the enormous fountain. By night everyone is there, passing by, waiting for someone or something, sitting on the steps for a beer before moving off into the night with friends. It was originally designed in the first half of the 19th century when they needed to open up a thoroughfare in the city centre. Whatever was in the way got knocked down to make room, including the church of San Domenico. On 25th April 1945 it was scene of the dramatic events leading to the liberation of the city by Partisans who lead the surrendered German troupes under the fountain. It still is a place of congregation and whenever the Genoese have something to celebrate or something to protest about they head for Piazza de Ferrari.
