Every town needs a main square, and Kossuth Square ticks that box for Debrecen. The Great Reformed Church stands at its head, and elegant buildings are found at every turn. The square is named after Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution and one of the country’s greatest patriots. The man from Tokaj is commemorated with a statue in front of the church, the most impressive of a variety of statues all around the square. A whole host of events take place in this most delightful spot throughout the year.
