Frigyes Déri was one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the Habsburg lands, making a name for himself at Worlds Fairs across the world, and it is his collection that makes up the bulk of the artefacts on show at his eponymous museum. One of the finest museums in the country, the permanent exhibitions are equal parts fascinating and varied, displaying a samurai courthouse alongside ancient Egyptian collections and more. Another permanent exhibition showcases the literary history of the city, all inside one of Debrecen’s most impressive pieces of architecture. Frigyes Déri would almost certainly have been a very proud man.
