Thousands of liters of wine are consumed each day on Curacao, but until this year, all wine had to be imported from abroad. Luckily, a Dutch couple had the courage to start their own winery on local island soil near the international airport. In the decades leading up to this momentous event their family had built the most successful winery in the Netherlands and with this experience to hand they took up yet another great challenge. The ‘Flying Winemakers’, who have successfully implemented similar projects in other countries, have 25 hectares at their disposal. The harvesting of the first of the eight varieties of grapes that were planted is scheduled for the second quarter of 2016. Until then, you’ll have to content yourself with the full bodied taste of Dutch wines. A tour of the grounds takes you right through the vineyards and afterwards you can relax at the outdoor terrace of the adjoining Landhuis Hato, which is also home to a small B&B. Drop by on Fridays for their happy hour.
