90% of the local population speaks Papiamento, a Creole language, but most official government documents and many road signs and advertisements are in Dutch. In 2007 the Netherlands Antilles declared Dutch, Papiamentu and English as official languages, in recognition of the Dutch-speaking, Papiamentu-speaking and English-speaking communities on all the islands. In general, four languages are spoken on the island including English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamento.
