A confusing ride away from Kralendijk (follow signs for Lac Cai), the Mangrove Information Center opened in 2002. Nature lovers can learn about local ecology and wildlife as well as the crucial role mangroves play in the larger, fragile ecosystem of Bonaire. Billboards explain the way plants and trees filter saltwater and convert it into fresh water. From here you can also book two highly recommended tours through the narrow channels of this pristine landscape. You’ll encounter a variety of birds and fish like herons, mullets, barracuda, trumpet fish and yellow tails while zigzagging with a kayak or solar boat. Although the kayaks are easy to manoeuvre, watch out for the overhanging trees and bring a water resistant camera because you'll probably get wet. Please note that credit cards aren't accepted and the nearest ATM is a 20-minute drive away.
