Located on the ground floor of one of Amsterdam’s most historic hotels, the Café Americain serves upmarket cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner and although an evening meal can cost you dearly, you can get eggs Benedict for under €10. Its jazz brunches and high tea are also tempting, but many people, especially tourists, come here to soak up the old world atmosphere of its grand interior, which is a mix of both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles that includes murals, stained glass and fantastic views of the fountain outside. Locals sip coffee and peruse newspapers and magazines at the reading table at the far end.
