Vydubytskyi Monastery

  Vydubytska 40      (+380) 44 285 35 81     more than a year ago
Another gem of 11 century architecture. It was established in 1070-1077 by Vsevolod, the son of Yaroslav the Wise. The monastery bears its name from the legend, which tells us a fate of wooden Pagan idols, destroyed by Volodymyr the Great when he christened the Kyivan Rus. Kyiv citizens ran along the Dnipro river calling for the old gods to emerge from water. The idols emerged in the area called lated Vydubychi, which from old Slavic means "to swim up" or "emerge from water". The oldest church, survived over the centuries is St Michael's. It may be lacks all golden stuuf all other churches, but marvellously peaceful inside. Baroque-style Church of St. George and new Transfiguration Refectory were built in late 17 century. To get there you should either walk along Naberezhne shosse and then up the narrow road, or walk in the Botanical Gardens, take left to lilac garden, past it and go down the asphalt walking path. You will see well recognisable blue dome with golden stars.
